Advocate Thuli Madonsela recently received the Satyagraha Award for her role as South Africa’s former Public Protector, and the remarkable impact she had upon the preservation of democracy. Honoured for her unshakable integrity, steadfast commitment and utter courage, characteristics enshrined by the Constitution, she has earned herself another label among citizens: Woman of Steel.
Daring to voice the concerns of South African people, Madonsela has worked tirelessly to defend her country from corruption and incompetence in all forms. In light of this, she has now been awarded the German Africa Foundation’s annual prize for exceptional contributions to promoting peace, democracy and human rights.
Having garnered respect from leaders throughout South Africa, and the world, Madonsela received further praise from Professor Njabulo Ndebele. In his capacity as Chairman of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Njabulo mentioned that the efforts of Advocate Madonsela’s office have upheld the Constitution as supreme law, and ensured that no one person is beyond its reach.
