The power of one: community development in South Africa

‘Alms of Love’ began the week that Donna Oakes paid a visit to the informal settlement just a few hundred metres from where she lived. What she saw and experienced then left an impression which inspired her to take action, and so by reaching out to friends, family and neighbours she began a sandwich drive.

Organising a collective effort helped Donna make enough sandwiches to feed the community of 30 people every weekend from April to December in 2016, before she took things to the next level. In December 2016, Donna opened her home to the same community members and hosted a spectacular Christmas party, with all the bells and whistles including jumping castles, pizza and treats. Of course she had Santa make a special stop at the party to hand out presents to every child, just the way they dreamed.

Setting her sights on a bigger and better 2017 for her community, Donna is now seeking assistance in providing hot meals instead of sandwiches, to build a solid nutritional foundation for those in need. You can follow Donna’s group ‘Alms of Love’ on Facebook and receive all the updates or jump in and get involved.
