Johannesburg has made it into the Top 100 Cities for students in the 2017 QS Best Student Cities survey. Sharing top status with Cairo, as the only other African city, Johannesburg ranked 84th in its first ever appearance on the Top 100 list. Criteria for the survey included tuition fee affordability and living costs. At the top of the leaderboard this year is Montreal, kicking Paris out of pole position after four years in the lead.

Known as ‘Egoli’ or the City of Gold, Johannesburg may not usually come to mind as a preferred student city but here are 10 reasons it has found its way onto the coveted list:

  4. Wide variety of parks and recreational activities
  5. Solid support structure for foreign students and expatriates
  6. Continued urban regeneration programmes

  10. Growing public transportation network
