Cleaning up Cape Town: plastic brickwork

Browse By

EcoBrick is changing the environmental and construction landscapes, not to mention the wonders it works for youth and social development. Beginning with an empty 2 litre soft drink bottle, chips packets, straws and other plastic waste products are squeezed into the bottle’s space to create a well-insulated and long-lasting brick that is also resistant to earthquakes, as is necessary for building in the Cape Town region.

Nukuzola Vivian Dlabantu drives the project by working with youth at risk of engaging in socially deviant behaviour such as substance abuse and violence. Her dedication is evident in her daily and weekly execution of a variety of activities that help youth develop life skills while contributing to a worthwhile project.
